The Computer Center was established in 1983 at Madras Institute of technology , Chromepet, first of its kind in the Southern Region with an PDP 11/60 Computer System rendering service to the entire MIT Campus.
Subsequently in 1998 the PDP 11/60 was replaced with Desktop PC's. This Center serves as the central facilities for the entire campus. Earlier the mark processing of the UG & PG students was completely handled at the Computer Center.
Computer Center has conducted training programs for 30 batches of socially backward students sponsored by Government of TamilNadu.
It also conducts training programs for the non-teaching staff and wards of the MIT staff, periodically.
One of the major tasks of Computer Center, currently is to equip the UG students of all branches in their first year course of study. They are extensively trained in programming skills in both WINDOWS and UNIX platform with the present infrastructure of 150 systems and around 700 students are trained every year. Under community program with the aid of TEQIP grant a modernized lab has been set up which at present accommodate one complete batch per session which makes it very efficient for monitoring and helping the students.
Apart from using for 1st year lab this modernized lab developed with TEQIP fund are following activities are also made with the help of the student body "Computer Society of MIT"

Training MIT students in various programming skills to improve their aptitude with emphasis on placement.

Annual technical meet called Compute UTSAV and Carte Blance an exclusive event for and on free open
source technologies.

Training programmes on computer awareness for near by schools under TEQIP community programme.
